RIAB Member
Role Overview
NBIM seeks one highly accomplished renewable infrastructure investment professional to join
its Renewable Infrastructure Advisory Board (RIAB). This advisory body provides independent counsel on transactions and strategic direction for NBIM's renewable infrastructure portfolio, operating with rigorous governance standards analogous to an investment committee.
RIAB consists of five members: the CIO of Active Strategies, the Global Head of Energy and Infrastructure, the Global Head of Real Assets Risk, and two external advisors.
The Advisory Boards Main Responsibilities
§ Transaction Review: Evaluate proposed platform investments, acquisitions, dispositions,
and significant capital deployments across NBIM's global renewable infrastructure portfolio. Challenge assumptions on renewable energy platforms, grid infrastructure investments,
and co-investment opportunities. Provide market intelligence and informed judgment on risk-adjusted returns based on pattern recognition from comparable situations in wind, solar, transmission, battery storage, and emerging technologies across multiple geographies.
§ Strategic Oversight: Conduct semi-annual reviews of portfolio strategy including geographic allocation, technology mix (generation vs. transmission/distribution), regulatory environment differences across markets, and partnership structures with major infrastructure managers. Contribute perspectives on platform construction, the evolution from direct infrastructure investments to complex platform arrangements, and appropriate structures for market entry
and portfolio expansion.
§ Market Intelligence: Provide external perspectives on global energy market evolution,
particularly around renewable energy policy frameworks, AI datacenter demand impacts
on power infrastructure, interconnection and grid constraint challenges, and emerging
regulatory developments. Help identify potential analytical blind spots in rapidly evolving
energy transition dynamics and provide comparative insights across different market structures.
§ Governance: Provide independent oversight ensuring investment decisions align with NBIM's mandate, risk tolerance, and return objectives. Bring external perspective on ESG considerations, regulatory developments across key markets, and emerging risks in renewable infrastructure investing.
Candidate Profile
§ Experience from institutional infrastructure investment with senior capital allocation responsibility in renewable energy and/or grid infrastructure / Experience at major pension funds, Energy Companies, sovereign wealth funds, insurance companies, or large-scale infrastructure investment managers with renewable energy focus
§ Understanding of investment lifecycle, across renewable energy platforms, transmission infrastructure, and energy transition assets in developed markets
§ Track record evaluating complex structures including platform investments, joint ventures with major infrastructure managers, separate accounts, and co-investment arrangements
§ Ability to provide comparative perspectives across different renewable infrastructure markets
§ Exposure to North American renewable infrastructure markets alongside European or other international markets
§ Experience with major global infrastructure managers and platforms
§ Understanding of different regulatory and market structures (competitive wholesale markets, regulated utilities, hybrid models)
Conflicts of Interest - Critical Requirement
NBIM is highly sensitive to conflicts of interest in relation to this role. All candidates undergo comprehensive conflicts screening with complete disclosure of financial interests, professional relationships with infrastructure managers (particularly those with existing or potential NBIM partnerships), and family connections. Members must recuse themselves when specific conflicts arise and provide ongoing updates if circumstances change.
Time Commitment
Monthly advisory meetings (60-90 minutes via video) and semi-annual in-person strategic sessions in Oslo (full-day). Total annual commitment approximately 15-20 days including preparation time and occasional ad-hoc consultations on significant transactions.
Compensation and Term
Compensated advisory role with fees commensurate with responsibility and time commitment. Three-year initial term, renewable by mutual agreement.
